Pierre Lepage
Epinal, Francia, 1906 - 1983
He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris and the Salon d'Automne, of which he became a member in 1941. His first solo exhibition is mounted in Paris in 1935, followed by many others in provincial towns.
In 1924 he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Nancy, where he was a student of Victor Prouvé, and by 1929 he moved to Paris to work in André Lhote's atelier. He often traveled to Morocco where he practiced painting in completely different light conditions than he was accustomed to. After his marriage in 1935, he moved for long periods to Brittany to paint, fascinated by the nature, customs and festivals of the Breton tradition.

In 1939 he received the Villa Abdel-Tif award from the government of Algeria, but was not allowed to go there until 1941 after his release from the army.
Between 1943 and 1945 he was appointed painter of the Army in North Africa and Commander of the Order of Arts, Sciences and Letters. In 1983 the Salon d'Automne remembered him with a major retrospective.
